From Kitchen to Studio: the FTLOY story

For The Love of Yarn was born from a need for creativity, identity, and a little bit of sanity after I (Lisa) became a mum for the first time. I wanted something that was just for me - a way to reconnect with my creative side outside of nappies and night feeds. Having always been an "artsy fartsy" type and coming from a graphic design background, I naturally gravitated toward something hands-on, and when I stumbled across crochet, I was immediately hooked (pun absolutely intended!).

Around the same time, I was looking for ways to help my mum, who lived with chronic rheumatoid and osteoarthritis and found it difficult to hold traditional crochet hooks. I started experimenting with making custom polymer clay handles to make crafting easier and more accessible for her.

Soon after creating hooks, I fell head over heels for the world of hand-dyed yarn. The ability to play with colour, texture, and endless combinations of creativity was irresistible. I taught myself to dye yarn, one messy skein at a time, and slowly built a collection that reflected the bold, vibrant energy I always loved.

One thing led to another, and what began as a small personal project quickly turned into something much bigger - the start of For The Love of Yarn. What started in my kitchen grew into my first little studio space, and from there into a larger and larger creative home.

Today, For The Love of Yarn is based in a bright, bustling studio in the heart of Glasgow, Scotland. We dye vibrant yarns, create handmade crochet hooks and notions, and - most importantly to us - have built a growing community of makers who inspire, support, and celebrate one another. Whether you’re picking up your very first skein or you’re a seasoned fiber artist, you’ll always find a warm welcome here. Creativity is for everyone - and we refuse to ever put our crayons back in the box.

About Lisa

Hi, I’m Lisa - founder, hand-dyer, graphic designer, mum and Merchant of Chaos here at For the Love of Yarn!

Having been able to enjoy the mental health benefits of crafting and dyeing yarn, I'm passionate about sharing the joy of colour with everyone who walks through our door.

My favourite thing about the studio is the community - being able to welcome in yarns of all walks of life and ability, and making each and every person feel that they have a safe yarny haven here in the studio. There’s no wrong way to be creative here, and there’s always room at the table for you. We host regular weekly knit nights on Monday evenings and Sunday afternoons, and for those unable to visit in person, I host an online knit n natter on zoom on Wednesday evenings.

If you're able to visit, you'll probably find me behind the dye pans having a play with pigment, or sitting on the floor (goblin style) and relaxing with my latest spinning project (now we're Ashford stockists I've been more spinning obsessed than ever!). The kettle and coffee machine are always on and ready to go!

My current FTLOY yarn obsession? It has to be Bru - it’s pure dopamine in skein form!

About Jen

Hey, I’m Jen - Lisa’s best friend, Colour Wizard (well, dye apprentice but colour wizard sounds cooler...), spinner and yarn enthusiast.

I first started working at For The Love of Yarn to help Lisa stay (somewhat) organised and sane, and have quickly become part of the furniture! As a spinner, knitter, crocheter, stitcher and now dyer, I've become more and more obsessed with yarn and fibre, the joy of working with it and the lovely folk who use it.

You’ll usually find me keeping the studio running smoothly (or, trying to), which can involve anything from organising spreadsheets to trying to helping Lisa focus on the more tedious side of the studio... (there's a disgusting amount of admin involved!).

I’m really passionate about sharing my skills and knowledge in knitting and spinning with those who want to learn. I believe creativity should be accessible to everyone - it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to be meaningful - you’ll often find me making my own bobbins out of toilet rolls and figuring out new ways to repurpose everyday things! Sustainability is a core value at the heart of everything I do.

My current FTLOY favourite is the brand new fibre braids of Yak/ Polwarth blend and Camel/ Alpaca blend - watch this space for its launch on the website soon!

The Studio...

...where all the magic happens!

Tucked away in the corner of an industrial estate carpark in the East End of Glasgow, you'll discover a bright, bustling space full of yarn, laughter, and of course loads of tea, coffee and cake... which is absolutely necessary to fuel the creative chaos!

Inside, you’ll find walls lined with hand-dyed yarns in every colour you can imagine, cosy corners for crafting, and a creative buzz you can feel the moment you walk in. We’re proud to be more than just a workspace - we’re a growing community where makers of all kinds are welcome. Whether you’re popping in for a skein or staying for a chat and a cuppa, there’s always a place for you here.
