Welcome to issue 9 Spring / Summer 2026! This issue is inspired by the designer and colourist Bernat Klein with an article written by Alison Harley, Chair of the Bernat Klein Foundation.

Knitting and crochet designs are inspired by Klein combining textures and colours in suprising ways.

And of course lots more about Scottish sheep breeds, from the Bronze Age to the Vikings, the history of the wool industry in Scotland, from the Borders Abbeys to the British Wool Marketing Board, and contemporary projects showcasing Scottish crafts and artisans.

Knit Designs:

  1. SELKIRK TOP BY SAMRIA HILL A top down knitted tee with motif inspired by the mixed textures and colours of designer Bernat Klein.
  2. BERNAT KLEIN VEST BY EMMA VINING A versatile vest made in sport weight yarn draws on Klein's textured checks and blended shades.
  3. STUDIO WRAP & SCARF BY MADDIE HARVEY This rectangular scarf (or double width wrap) offers an opportunity to play with different yarns to see colour and texture interact.
  4. PLAYFUL STITCHES VEST BY SOLVEIGH LASS- EVANS A tabard top with sides ties uses slip stitches to play with colour.
  5. COMMONALITY COWL BY JO BINT Basketweave mosaic and textured picot patterns decorate this cowl made using Shetland Wool.
  6. WEAVER'S SCARF BY JESS BENNET Inspired by Huguenot weavers from the 17th century and also evoking Klein's textures, this surprising crocheted scarf combines fluffy and smooth yarns.
  7. FRANCES TEE BY MANDY MOORE This elegant tee is crafted from the bottom up with Shetland lace, featuring subtle bursts of colour.

Crochet Designs:

  1. SUNDERLAND CROCHET TOP BY SAMIRA HILL Inspired by Bernat Klein's woven textiles, especially his mohair tweed, this crochet top is worked from the top down.
  2. HOMAGE VEST BY FAY DASPHER-HUGHES The houndstooth motif Klein often used in his design features on a lightweight, super-soft crocheted vest top.

Features:

  1. BERNAT KLEIN: PROTECTING A CREATIVE AND CULTURAL LEGACY Alison Harley, chair of the Bernat Klein Foundation, writes a personal reflection in meeting the designer and artist with a lifelong fascination for colour.
  2. THE EVOLTION OF THE SCOTTISH WOOL INDUSTRY Sheep shaped Scotland - wool went from home craft to the rise and fall of big business. Abbeys, towns and ports helped the industry boom and connect Scotland with towns across Europe.
  3. THE FLOCKS OF THE WHITE MONKS From the 12th century the Cistercians established thriving communities across Europe, notably at Melrose Abbey. Carol Richardson tells the story of how their excess wool became the basis of Britain's wool wealth.
  4. VEERE: SCOTLAND'S GATEWAY TO EUROPE Convenient geography of a royal marriage made the Dutch fishing port of Veere a vital part of Scotland's prosperity.
  5. FORGOTTEN FLEECE TALES A travelling exhibition celebrating Scottish textile arts highlights wool's versatility and cultural significance. Contributions from artists, crafters and scientists showcase the creative potential of repurposed fleece.
  6. FIBRE CRAFTS AND FURRY FRIENDS: A RECIPE FOR MINDFULNESS A life of crafts and making led to Lara Armitage founding At Birkhill House a community organisation for improving mental health in the Scottish Borders using caring, creativity and collaboration - and alpacas.
  7. DYE WEAVE PLEAT Five kilts inspired by frosty beaches combine the skills of three artisan studios to promote Scotland's textile traditions on an international stage.
  8. SCOTTISH NATIVE SHEEP BREEDS: A FROLIC THROUGH TIME AND LANDSCAPE From the Bronze Age to the Vikings, Scottish sheep breeds have wild roots in old migrations, island life, mixing genes and evolving agriculture.
